Radboud University, we will continue our job of teaching, doing research and speaking up about matters of human rights and social justice. Because that’s what we thought you are paying us to do. Yet we take notice (as we’ve already known for a while) that you as our employer will not be there to protect us while doing this work. We’re trying not to take that too personally. Based on our expertise as scholars of history, social movements and politics, we know that many people are simply too scared to resist fascism, and that most leaders crumble under political pressure. You are no exception. We just find it utterly indigestible that this university that claims to contribute to a healthy, free world with equal opportunities for all, has now shown its true colours and bows to Zionism, which is not only a form of racism, but also an ideology that is now responsible for a genocide. While you think you are winning this case by driving away one of us, we as your remaining employees will not let you forget this shameful choice. You have lost any claim to call yourself progressive, emancipatory, future-thinking, impactful or sustainable. You will continue to lose talented colleagues and internal and external legitimacy, so long as you continue to be a collaborator with fascism and associated extremist lobbies.
