Nieuwe website geeft overzicht van banden tussen Belgische universiteiten en Israël

Vandaag is de website academiccomplicity.be online gegaan, die per Belgische universiteit een overzicht geeft van de institutionele banden met Israëlische instellingen en bedrijven die medeplichtig zijn aan de voortdurende genocide in Gaza of andere onderdelen van Israëls beleid van geweld en onderdrukking tegen Palestijnen. Met deze website willen de initiatiefnemers – maatschappelijke organisaties Stop Wapenhandel, European Legal Support Centre (ELSC) en onderzoeksbureau Solid Sustainability Research, met hulp van vrijwilligers van verschillende universiteiten – studenten en medewerkers die actie voeren op de universiteiten om een einde te maken aan deze banden en alle andere geïnteresseerden een betrouwbare en zo volledig mogelijke informatiebron bieden. In totaal gaat het om meer dan 200 relaties met onder andere Israëlische bedrijven, universiteiten en overheidsinstellingen, waarvan een aanzienlijk aantal werkt met of voor de Israëlische strijdkrachten. 

Rauf, een studentenactivist van de Universiteit Gent benadrukt de noodzaak van deze website: “Israëlische onderzoeksinstellingen zijn transparant over hun banden met het IDF, ze scheppen openlijk op over hun steun voor de genocide en hun rol in de bezetting van het land van Palestijnen, en ze dienen als spreekbuis voor haatpropaganda. Hetzelfde kan niet gezegd worden van de Universiteit Gent, die geen verantwoordelijkheid neemt voor hun samenwerkingen met deze Israëlische instellingen. In plaats daarvan proberen ze hun banden af te schermen van publieke controle door allerlei ondoorzichtige mechanismen, ingewikkelde schema’s en multilaterale onderzoeksconsortia op te zetten.” 

Em, een medestudent uit Gent, voegt toe: “Dankzij deze website vonden we banden die de universiteit niet benoemde, ook al beloofden ze volledige transparantie. Daarom helpt het ons om het universiteitsmanagement verantwoordelijk te houden over de bestaande banden.”

De database is gebaseerd op publiek beschikbare informatie over onder andere samenwerkingen in door de EU gefinancierde onderzoeksprojecten, uitwisselingsprogramma’s en andere gezamenlijke initiatieven. De website is vergelijkbaar met die over Nederlandse universiteiten – academiccomplicity.nl – die in juni van dit jaar door dezelfde initiatiefnemende organisaties werd gelanceerd.

Mark Akkerman (onderzoeker bij Stop Wapenhandel): “Bijzonder zorgwekkend zijn ook de samenwerkingen met grote internationale wapenbedrijven als Thales en Airbus, die niet alleen wapens leveren aan Israël, maar ook veelvuldig samenwerken met de Israëlische wapenindustrie.” Deze industrie, die nauw verbonden is met de strijdkrachten, staat hoog aangeschreven op de internationale markt, waar ze wapens aanprijst als ‘combat proven’, met andere woorden: ‘getest op Palestijnen’.

New website provides overview of ties between Belgian universities and Israel

Today the website academiccomplicity.be has gone online, presenting an overview per Belgian university of the institutional ties with Israeli institutions and companies that are complicit in the ongoing genocide in Gaza and/or other parts of Israel’s policies of violence and oppression against Palestinians. With this website the initiators – civil society organisations Stop Wapenhandel (Dutch campaign against arms trade), European Legal Support Centre (ELSC) and research bureau Solid Sustainability Research, with the help of volunteers from several universities – want to provide students and staff members taking action at the universities to end these ties and all other interested parties with a reliable and as complete as possible source of information. In total, this concerns more than 200 relationships with, among others, Israeli companies, universities and government institutions, a significant number of which work with or for the Israeli armed forces. 

Rauf, a student activist from Ghent University emphasizes the need for this website: “Israeli research institutions are very transparent about their ties to the IDF, openly bragging about their support for the genocide and their role in occupying the Palestinians’ land, and serving as a mouthpiece for hate propaganda. The same cannot be said about Ghent University, which doesn’t take responsibility for their collaboration with these Israeli institutions. Instead, they aim to shield their ties from public scrutiny by installing all kinds of opaque mechanisms, elaborate schemes and multilateral research consortia.” 

Em, a fellow student from Ghent, adds: “This website allowed us to find even more ties the university did not feel inclined to communicate about, even though they promised full transparency. Therefore, it helps us to keep the university management accountable about the existing ties.”

The database is based on publicly available information about, among other things, collaborations in EU-funded research projects, exchange programmes and other joint initiatives. The website is similar to one about Dutch universities – academiccomplicity.nl – which was launched by the same initiating organisations in June this year.

Mark Akkerman (researcher at Stop Wapenhandel): “Particularly worrying are also the collaborations with large international arms companies like Thales and Airbus, which not only supply weapons to Israel but also frequently collaborate with the Israeli arms industry”. This arms industry, which is closely linked to the armed forces, is highly regarded on the international market, where it promotes weapons as ‘combat proven’, in other words: ‘tested on Palestinians’.
