Discussion: Decolonizing Martial Arts – 15th January

Kickboxing, Krav Maga and Karate, what do they all have in common? All of them have roots in Japanese martial arts. Yet despite the massive influence that the island nation has had on the means of violence and enforcment, many of us are unaware of its long history of colonialism.

Do Japanse martial arts have roots in colonialism? Can we unlearn colonial practises while practising these arts? We will try to answer these questions in this talk.
